The annual Blue Pony Tournament at Prairie Farms in Havre was another successful season debut for the Central A Ponies.
The HHS boys and girls won last season, and came close again this year, facing a tough group of golfers from Lewistown, Browning, CMR and Great Falls High. The HHS boys took second to Lewistown's 367 with a score of 372. And the HHS girls took first place with a score of 425, followed by a 439 from Browning.
Ramsey Drew led the Blue Pony boys with a score of 86, taking second place in the tournament for the second straight year. Freshman Jeff Miller also shined, taking fifth place with a 92 in his first-ever high school tournament. Spencer Ross also placed eighth with 94, while David Denny finished with 100 and Jerod Boles finished with a score of 101.
"I have higher expectations for this team now that I see what they can do," Havre High head coach McKinsey Rodriguez said. "Jeff Miller is going to be a great player, for his first round of his career he came in 5th place. I believe that this is only the start for him. Spencer Ross also shot a personal best (94)."
And for the Pony girls, Nikki Gabrielsen came in first place overall with a personal best 96. Boston Swensen also played well, finishing in third with a score of 103, while Katie Beck placed sixth with a 109. Payton Howard placed 10th in her first ever high school round with a 117, while Dani Murphy placed just outside the top 10 with a round of 120.
"(The) girls have an excellent shot at placing at divisionals this year," Rodriguez said. "Havre's 5 varsity players placed in the top 11 golfers of this tournament. Numbers are low but spirits are high."
Lewistown's Jesse Kynett was tops in the boys tournament with a wold score of 92.
Monday and Tuesday, the Ponies are back in action at the Great Falls High Invite, then will travel to East Glacier for the Browning Tournament on Friday.
