Celebrating People in Action!

I believe Havre is the best small town in America. But it is not for the obvious reason that I have this strong love for Havre. It is not our easy lifestyle or quality of life we enjoy, or the rich history we are blessed with that makes me feel this way. It is because of the people. It is the spirit of the people in this community that volunteer, that makes Havre the best place in America. This spirit is embedded in the hundreds of community folks who give back to the community by contributing, volunteering and participating to make Havre a better place for all, and not just themselves.

Volunteering is a gift to a whole community — it's a gift that benefits both the recipient and the giver. Volunteering is about discovering something that needs to be done and taking the action to meet the challenge. When looking around this town of ours, one realizes that many things that have happened, projects completed or activities that take place are all because people took action and encouraged others to make a difference.

Many people who volunteer say they do it because they find it is personally rewarding and satisfying. For young people, volunteering is a way to gain experience, leadership skills and career skills. They get a lot back for what they give. Why do they do it? Many enjoy themselves while working on a project. There is that feeling of being a part of something, the fulfillment and satisfaction of accomplishment and pride in making Havre better.

If I tried to make a list I would forget someone. So instead, I extend a big thank-you to each individual, organization, church, school, business and community official for your contribution to Havre over the past year.

Like the city it represents, the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce has a wonderful spirit from the board members through to the committees and their many projects. It's this spirit and dedication that has made this organization one of the model Chambers for others in Montana. The Chamber supports close to 300 members and hosts or sponsors 20 activities or events annually. This is only accomplished because of the 150-plus volunteers who make up the board and the 10 committees/task forces. They give of their time unselfishly to make things happen in Havre. The Chamber awards scholarships, raises funds, honors volunteers and businesses.

The diversity of the many projects of the Chamber brings together a great team of people. The rewards have been wonderful working with these unselfish, dedicated, enthusiastic people. The work of the Chamber has also created many wonderful partnerships that have netted huge dividends for the community.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, stand with me in thanking the hundreds of community folks who have given back to make Havre the best town in America.

It is easy to get involved. One doesn't have to look far to find an organization or project with open arms to include you. Be involved and you can make a difference. Thank you to the hundreds who have made a positive difference in our community through volunteering as we recognize their commitment during National Volunteer Week, April 15 to 21.
