Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., was in downtown Havre Thursday morning calling on people to help him "Liberate Main Street" from what he called the failed policies of the last four years.
Havre Daily News/Tim LeedsAndrew Brekke, left, president of the Havre City Council and chair of the Hill County Republican Committee, talks to Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., and his wife, Jan, before Rehberg held a "Liberate Main Street" rally in downtown Havre Thursday.
Rehberg, who is challenging Democrat Jon Tester for his Senate seat, said uncertainty about taxes and government regulations is holding small businesses from leading the country to a full economic recovery.
"And we think that if you want to stimulate the economy you have to do it through a consistent tax structure so you know exactly where you're going to be from year to year to year," he said to a small crowd outside of Norman's Ranch and Sportswear.
Not all of the crowd were his supporters — a group held signs calling on him to answer questions about corporate spending on political campaigns following the U.S. Supreme Court on the Citizens United case.
Rehberg said he decided to run for the Senate and now is traveling around the state to offer an alternative to Tester, adding that Montana could be the state that changes the majority in that house.
"Hopefully we can make a fundamental change in the direction this country has taken," he said.
