Hi-Line Football Roundup: Chinook, C/J-I earn big victories

As local teams get further, and further into their seasons, the competition keeps getting more difficult while wins grow more, and more important.

Friday in Big Sandy, the Box Elder Bears got another rude awakening to a varsity schedule. The Big Sandy Pioneers defeated the Bears 70-20 in Class C 6-Man action.

The Pioneers were ultimately unstoppable, as they scored on big play after big play. But it wasn't just the offense that found the end zone, it was the Pioneer defense and special teams who also ran wild. Big Sandy led 32-0 after the first quarter and never looked back. The Pioneers added 22 in the second quarter, eight in the third and eight more in the fourth.

Trevor Lackner led the scoring barrage. He scored on a 75-yard kick return, a 70-yard punt return, and a 45-yard run. Lackner also tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Lane Martin, as well as a three-yard TD pass to Zack Leader, and a 25-yard TD pass to Lane Martin. Lackner also scored on the defensive side of the ball, taking a 45-yard interception to the house.

Box elder played hard the entire game, and would finally get rewarded for their efforts in the closing seconds of the first half.

After trailing 54-0, Chasman Baker reeled in a 35-yard TD pass from Brandon The Boy as the horn sounded to end the half. The big play was a bright spot for the Bears offense who also added Will Ketchum score in the third and a Josiah Taylor score in the fourth. Ketchum ran a kick return 75 yards to pay dirt, and Taylor caught a 10-yard pass from The Boy.

The Pioneers remain undefeated on the season, while the Bears are still looking for their first win.

Chinook 29, GFC 21

The 8-Man Chinook Sugarbeeters were also at home on Friday, but narrowly escaped with the win.

The Beeters fell last weekend, but now sit at 2-1 overall after defeating Great Falls Central 29-21 at Hoon field.

Scoring went back and forth for most of the game. The Beeters did lead 8-3 after the first quarter, as well as 15-10 at the half. But after holding a lead for a good chunk of the contest, Great Falls Central tied the game at 21-21 late in the fourth. It took a last minute four-yard run by Zack Molyneaux to keep the Beeters from suffering back-to-back losses.

Molyneaux had the Beeters looking like their old selves. He rushed 34 times and racked up 245 yards. With his heroic rushing TD, Molyneaux also threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Surber.

Scott Schmitt shined on defense with three interceptions, but also scored on a one-yard run. And Robby Klingaman also scored for the Beeters, finding the end zone on a 30-yard rush.

Harlem 51, Poplar 6

In Class B action, the Harlem Wildcats also found the win column on Friday, but getting there in a dominating fashion.

The Wildcats played host to Poplar and earned the 51-6 dominating win at home. The victory came after the Wildcats opened the first quarter with 13 points, and opened the first half with a 19-0 lead. The Wildcats also posted 25 in the third and seven in the fourth, while they allowed just one score in the third frame.

Seth Adams scored three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats, but Stanley Irvine and T'Jay Allen also added two scores each. Adams scored on a two-yard run, a 60-yard punt return, and on a 65-yard kick return. Irvine scored on a 15-yard reception and on a 25-yard reception, while Allen scored on a 20-yard pass and on a 35-yard run.

Augusta 28, North Star 20

The Class C 6-Man North Star Knights attempted to put a streak of wins together on Saturday, but ran into a tough Augusta team. After defeating St. Regis last week, on Saturday the Elks defeated the Knights 28-20, ending the short streak.

North Star was playing from behind from the start of the game, but just couldn't close the gap in time. They trailed 14-0 after the first frame, and trailed 14-7 at the break. The Knights added six in the third quarter, but still trailed 22-13 with just one quarter left. North Star added another score, but so did the Elks, keeping the North Stars from any shot at a comeback.

Gavin Spinler scored on a 42-yard run and on a 64-yard kick return. Jaxon Simonson also scored for the Knights, rushing to pay dirt on a 30-yard carry.

The Knights are now 1-1 on the season.

Chester/J-I 28, Centerville 24

The Class C Chester/J-I Hawks also had a close call on Saturday, but remain undefeated on the season with a four-point win.

Playing on the road, the Hawks used two big quarters to get out in front of Centerville, and stay there. The Hawks scored 14 points in the first quarter and 14 more in the third, while surging Centerville scored six in the second, 12 in the third and six points in the fourth.

Erik Kelly helped lead the Hawks to victory with 33 carries for 271 yards rushing. He also scored three touchdowns. Kelly scored on a six-yard run, a 55-yard run, and on a five-yard run.

Jordan Oraw also scored on a five-yard run for the Hawks.
