Havre students offered more Northern courses

Havre High School students looking to get a leg up on college courses could have a few more options soon.

At Tuesday night's Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting, Havre High School Principal Craig Mueller and Montana State University-Northern's Dean of Extended University Randy Bachmeier explained a plan to more than double the Northern courses available to students, from three to seven.

The new courses would include Theatre Workshop 105, Fundamentals of Speech, Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Sociology. Havre High School and Northern already jointly offer college writing, college algebra, and trigonometry and complex numbers.

Bachmeier explained that the university system's Board of Regents have set up an agreement where students can enroll in classes for half the regular price, with no extra student fees.

"It's just a great opportunity for students to get a jump start, " Bachmeier said. "They can get most of their gen-eds done before graduation. "

Northern also gets a boost in enrollment and, Bachmeier explained, the change will allow "for our programs to have contact with Havre High students. "

The board tabled the discussion until their planning meeting on Oct. 23 at which time they should know whether Curtis Smeby both serving on the board and teaching the sociology class is legally problematic.

If passed, Havre High students could start signing up when Northern's registration opens on Nov. 1, for the spring semester.
