Weather prompts schools to shut down

Most of the students on the Hi-Line got a day off of school, courtesy of Winter Storm Brutus.

By 7:45 a. m. today, Havre Public Schools announced that classes were canceled. Havre Superintendent Andy Carlson said that he was sure the students could get to schools safely today if there was class, but he was concerned about the ability to get children home at the end of the day, assuming the snow continues to pile up, so he decided not to risk it.

At Montana State University-Northern, Chancellor Jim Limbaugh felt similarly.

"Due to worsening conditions and the projections of additional snowfall, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the safety of our faculty, staff and students that we close MSU-N today, " Limbaugh said in a press release, at 8:15 a. m. today.

St. Jude Thaddeus school also closed for the day.

Administrators at schools in Chinook and Big Sandy have both decided to keep their schools open today.

Big Sandy High School staff said that the weather in Big Sandy is not nearly as bad as in Havre.

Calls made to North Star, Harlem and Box Elder school districts have not been answered this morning, but local radio is reporting that they are closed.
