Incumbent Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy, D-Box Elder, defeated a state representative in Tuesday's Democratic primary who was trying to take back the seat in Senate District 16.
Windy Boy defeated Rep. Frank Smith, D-Poplar, 800-598.
Windy Boy and Smith could not be reached for comment this morning.
As no other candidates have filed in the race, Windy Boy now should retain his seat in the district, which stretches from Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation in Chouteau and Hill counties to Roosevelt County near the North Dakota Border, where it includes part of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.
Smith successfully ran for the state House of Representatives in 2010, after Windy Boy defeated him twice in 2008.
Windy Boy won the Democratic primary in that year. Smith then filed to run as an independent, and Windy Boy also defeated him in the general election.
