Now that the first weekend is in the books for the Havre High cross country team, they should have a pretty good idea of how they stand up against the talent in the state.
Friday the Central A Blue Ponies were in Cut Bank, where they ran in the Cut Bank Time Trials. No team scores were kept, but several Pony runners recorded top times, and were amongst the best in the field.
The HHS boys were led by Marc Klimas, finishing as the No. 15 runner with a time of 18:06.15. Desmond Fialkosky followed as the 24th runner and a time of 18:28.93. The rest of the Pony finishers were Elijah David 19:29.70 (36), Dylan Stewart 19:55.12 (45), Brandon Robertson 20:46.16 (64), Dakotah Christianson 21:11.16 (68), Alec Drew 21:19.4 (73), Ramsey Drew 21:19.87 (74) and Derek Vandessel 22:22.39 (87).
The boys still have a lot of work to do, but the HHS girls had an especially impressive season debut.
Returning state runner Jess Wiken was the third place runner overall, and recorded a time of 20:12.21. Katie Christianson ran a 20:17.14 for fourth place, and Tricia Kinsella ran a 20:52.44 for a sixth place finish. Morgan Mazurkiewicz rounded out the top ten with a time of 21:54.73, and a finish of ninth place.
But the HHS girls had several other solid finishes as well.
Larissa Price finished in 22:48.92 (20), followed by Liz Facio in 23:54.43 (34), Kiana Robertson 24:35.84 (41), McKenna Barkus in 24:48.16 (44), Kayla Berg in 26:35.18 (59), Maurissa Dionne in 26:41.95 (60), Tori Mazurkiewicz in 27:07.91 (66), Brooke LaValley in 27:41.49 (73), Lainey Chagnon in 27:58.75 (77), Neya Bischoff in 29:11.63 (80), Raynell Clancy in 29:30.43 (82), Rachel Majeres in 29:31.17 (83), Amber Spraker in 30:15.67 (86), Rinnah Kinsella in 32:45.98 (94), and Sydne Huston, finishing in 33:06.53 and 95th overall.
The girls proved they will be a force in the Central A, while the boys team showed they also have talent. If the girls continue to run strong, and the boys continue to improve, both teams should be ready to turn in successful seasons.
Next up for the Ponies is a trip to the Malta Invitational.
