The Montana State University-Northern women came into Thursday night's game in Lewiston, Idaho off not one, but two big wins. The Lewis-Clark State Warriors didn't.
Instead, LC State was looking to rebound from a nearly 30-point loss to Westminster College last Saturday, and the No. 13 Warriors took it out on the Skylights Thursday night. The Warriors beat Northern 59-43, ending the Skylights two-game Frontier Conference winning streak.
Northern was able to hang tough early on, trailing by just a few points for much of the first half. But LC State managed to make the gap a eight points at intermission, and it didn't take the Warriors long to extend that lead. By the 10-minute mark, the Warriors were ahead 49-31 and they never looked back.
Shooting was tough for Northern against a hard-nosed and physical LC State defense. Samm Schermele, who came into the game just percentage points behind LC's Jasmine Stohr for the league lead in scoring, put in 14 points for MSU-N. Stohr on the other hand, pumped in a game-high 18 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds for LC State. The Skylights also got nine points by Jordan Bruursema and eight points and seven rebounds from Courtney Blume.
The loss to LC State drops MSU-N to 2-4 in conference play and 11-11 overall. The Skylights have another tough task in front of them as they prepare to face 11th-ranked Westminster College on Saturday night in Salt Lake City. Westminster is the highest-scoring team in the Frontier and the Griffins outlasted UGF in overtime on Thursday night.
The Skylights and Griffins tip off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night in Salt Lake. Northern then returns home to face UGF on Feb. 5.
