After a big weekend in which the Montana State University-Northern Skylights got back on track with a home sweep, senior Samm Schermele was named the Frontier Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Schermele is a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Great Falls. MSU-Northern won both of their weekend games including a victory over nationally ranked Carroll College. The Skylights upset No. 25 Carroll 68-49 and beat Rocky Mountain College 71-56. Schermele averaged 22 points, 3.5 rebounds, two assists and 2.5 steals for the weekend. She hit 54 percent of her field goals (13 of 24) and was a perfect 15-for-15 from the free-throw-line. Her points for the weekend moved Schermele to fifth on Northern's all-time scoring list with 1,370 career points.
It was also a big weekend for the MSU-Northern men's basketball team and Monday's latest NAIA Coaches Poll showed it. After a sweep of Carroll College, the ranked No. 16, and Rocky Mountain College, the Lights (13-5) moved into the Top 25. Northern comes in this week at No. 19 and is the highest-ranked Frontier Conference men's team. The Lights sit two spots ahead of Westminster College, while Carroll and Lewis-Clark State dropped out of the poll this week. In the women's poll, Westminster is ranked No. 11 and Lewis-Clark State is No. 13.
After a four-game sweep at home this past weekend, the Lights and Skylights hits the road. Northern teams play at Westminster College Thursday night in Salt Lake City. The Lights and Skylights then visit Lewis-Clark State Saturday night in Lewiston, Idaho.
Northern next plays at home Feb. 5 against the University of Great Falls.
