Another week of high school basketball. Another week of exciting girls games on the Hi-Line is in the books.
The Box Elder Bears have been one of the best teams in the area this season, and they showed that again on Thursday night with a dramatic one-point win over the Chinook Sugarbeeters in Chinook. The Bears defeated the Beeters 49-48 in a game that went down to the wire. The game was a game of runs. The Beeters ripped of an 18-6 second-quarter run to lead 22-17 at the half. But the Bears stormed back with a 14-6 run in the third quarter, which set up and exciting finish to the District 9C clash.
Aricka Wolf Chief scored 25 points for the Bears, while Makhayla Farmer had 19 points for the Beeters.
Friday night another classic 9C game as North Star upset first-place Big Sandy 59-55 in Rudyard. Neither team had bigger than a five-point lead throughout and the game was tied 27-27 at halftime. But the Knights outscored the Pioneers 16-12 in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Shelby Lipp scored 16 points and Jordan Spicher chipped in with 15 points for the Knight. In the loss, the Pioneers got 20 points from Mackenzie Jenkins and another 19 points from freshman Molly Herron.
Friday was also a good night for the Chester/J-I Hawks, who thumped visiting Sunburst 54-33 in a District 10C affair.
Jenni Ghekiere scored a game-high 18 points against the Refiners, while Jocelyn Woods chipped in with 13 points.
In Class B action, Harlem was also victorious on Friday night. The Wildcats went on the road and grabbed an important District 2B win over rival Poplar, 71-49. Harlem dominated the game from start to finish. The Wildcats outscored the Indians 21-7 in the first eight minutes and never looked back.
Jacinda Fuller led the Wildcats with a game-high 20 points, while Maurvella Fuller added 14 points and Hyapatia Getten chipped in with 12.
In a nonconference game on Friday night, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds suffered a 63-46 setback at high-powered Winnett-Grass Range. In the loss, the T-Birds got nine points form Kristie Runs Above.
Chinook rebounded from Thursday's heartbreaking loss to Box Elder by crushing Dodson 54-38 in Dodson on Friday night.
Saturday night saw Box Elder and C/J-I continue the winning ways.
In Box Elder, the Bears ripped the North Star Knights, 69-41, while C/J-I edged rival Simms 44-40 in Simms.
Against the Knights, the Bears broke open a tie game in the third quarter with a 21-7 run, and in the final 16 minutes, Box Elder held North Star to just 16 points. Aricka Wolf Chief was again the catalyst for the Bears, scoring a game-high 25 points, while Megan Parker chipped in with 15 and Crystal Stamper added 10. The Knights were paced by Jordan Spicher with 13 points and Kali Twedt with 10.
Meanwhile, the Hawks jumped out on Simms 19-6 in the first half, then had to hold the Tigers off in the second for the win. Jenni Ghekeire scored 13 points to lead the first-place Hawks.
Saturday night also saw Big Sandy rebound from its upset at North Star the night before. In Big Sandy, the Pioneers edged the Denton Trojans 49-40. Big Sandy got off to a fast start, outscoring the Trojans 17-6 in the first quarter.
Hannah Williams scored a game-high 23 points, while Mackenzie Jenkins chipped in with 10 points in the nonconference win.
In Class B play Saturday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars lost at Cut Bank 61-57 in a close District 1B game. The Morning Stars trailed 17-6 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to make a game of it the rest of the way.
In the conference loss, Rocky Boy was led by Caitlyn Gamble with 17 points and Leah Oncho with 12.
