This weekend the Havre High boys and girls cross country teams experienced the toughest field of competition they may ever face while a prep cross country participant.
Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies were one of 66 total teams in competition at the Mountain West Meet in Missoula. Teams came from all over Montana, Washington and Idaho for the event and brought some top-notch talent as well.
While in Missoula, the HHS girls were the No. 14 team overall with a final team score of 749. And the HHS boys finished as the No. 26 team overall with a final team score of 438. The Blue Pony girls were also the second team in the Class A this weekend, behind only Corvallis with 266. The Pony boys were the eighth team in the Central A this weekend.
"I thought we did pretty awesome this weekend," Havre High head coach Kyle Fisher said. "Our girls finishing 14th was awesome for us, and it was good that we finally got to see the teams out of the Western A. It was just a good weekend for our kids overall."
Jess Wiken led the girls with a time of 20:11, while Trisha Kinsella followed with a time of 20:31. Katie Christenson was amongst the leaders again with a time of 20:40, while Ashlynn Van Voast recorded a time of 21:11 as the Ponies' No. 4 finisher. Larissa Price also finished in 21:19, while Chanel Standing Rock finished with a time of 21:39, Kiana Robertson finished with a time of 23:03 and Mikell Kinsella finished with a time of 23:23.
The girls' pack time was also much improved this weekend, as the Ponies top runners finished within 1:08 of eachother.
On the boys side, the Ponies were led by Marc Klimas, Garrett Aguillard and Dolan Tuss who all took solid chunks off of their previous bests. Klimas and Aguillard brok into the 16-minute marks with times of 16:46 and 16:52. Tuss finished in a time of 17:38.
Derek Vandessel also helped lead the Ponies with a time of 18:05, while Desmond Fialkosky finished with a time of 18:26 and Dillon Seely finished with a time of 19:40. Dylan Stuart also finished with a time of 19:53 and Marvin Spotted bird finished in a time of 20:03.
Overall it was a great weekend for the Ponies. They ran on one of the toughest courses they will see this season, as well as against the toughest talent they will see. And to top it all off, this was the course the Ponies will see at state and all of the Ponies achieved personal bests.
"When your kids are PR'ing, that is all you can ask of them," Fisher said.
The Blue Pony cross country team will be back in action on Saturday when they host the annual Havre Invitational on the campus of Montana State University-Northern.
