Gloria R. Zachau
Gloria R. Zachau, 88, of Superior, Wis., died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, in the Bayshore Health Center, Duluth, Minn.
She was born on Oct. 30, 1923, in Whitefish, Mont., to Karl and Anna (Smith) Dupper.
Her family moved to Havre, Mont., where she was raised and graduated from high school in 1941. She went on to receive her secretarial degree from Northern Montana College in 1943.
She was working for the Great Northern Railroad in Havre, when she met Wayne Zachau of Superior, Wis. They were married in 1950.
They raised their family in Havre and were active members of the Messiah Lutheran Church. During that time, she received her bachelor's degree in secondary education.
Wayne's work then took them to Helena and Livingston, Mont., and Lincoln, Neb. Gloria always became involved in local schools as a substitute teacher and volunteer.
In 1986, they retired and moved to Solon Springs, Wis. Gloria continued to substitute teach and volunteer at the school. She and Wayne were active members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Solon Springs.
She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter, baker and musician. She was generous and loving, open-minded and accepting, compassionate and kind.
Gloria is survived by her children, Julie (Damon) Kapke of Duluth, Harry (Shannon) Zachau of Houston and Ruth (Michael) Burnham of Denver, Colo. ; one sister, Carmen (Julius) Christianson, Helena, Mont. ; one grandson, Tyler (Beth) Zachau; two great-grandchildren; and beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne in 2002; and an infant daughter, Mary Ann.
A private memorial service is being planned in the spring in Havre, Mont.
Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
