Belgrade gets HHS wrestlers, again

Heading into the weekend the Havre High wrestling team wanted to meet the Belgrade Panthers in the championship round, and after six duals, the Central A Ponies got what they wanted.

Friday and Saturday the Ponies were in Belgrade for the Class A duals. And after going through six rounds of action, the Ponies met up with the Central A Panthers in the championship round where the Panthers came away with the 36-34 win.

On the road to the championship, the Ponies defeated Butte Central 67-9, Miles City 54-21, Dillon 60-15, Lewistown 66-18, Laurel 44-33 and Ronan 56-12.

"It was a real good weekend," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "I was pleased with the kids. We just competed very well."

But the 36-34 loss to Belgrade doesn't exactly tell what happened in Saturday's championship dual.

Both teams were open at 98 pounds, but after an injury to Riley Labuda, the Ponies were open at 140 pounds as well. And with Nate Kennelly (105) not even making the trip this weekend, the Ponies gave up 12 points on two forfeits.

In the dual there were 12 matches actually wrestled, and the Ponies won seven while the Panthers won five. Havre also won the pin battle by getting four and only giving up three.

"We were pleased with what we got out of it," Filius said. "Our top kids wrestled real well and that was what we were after."

For the Ponies, Dual Stadel (119) defeated Bryce Weatherston 10-2, while Dillon Seely (135) defeated Keaton Sterling 4-2, Eli Hinebach (145) pinned Colter Devers in 1:11, Kameron Pribyl (152) pinned Lucas Mears in 3:59, Grant Pattison (160) defeated Keevan Pickle 9-6, Casey Schaub (171) pinned Andrew Erickson in 0:13 and Josh Salapich (285) pinned Zax Rossman in 1:26.

Gilbert Bara (112), Thomas Gruber (125), Zack Smith (130), Jared Ruttkofsky (189) and Tyler Adams (215) all suffered losses to the Panthers.

On the weekend, the Ponies dominated the competition. The only other close dual was when the Ponies defeated Laurel 44-33. Simply put, the Ponies just flat out competed hard and well.

"We competed from the beginning of the match all the way to the end," Filius said.

But the Ponies forfeits made the dual a lot closer than it looked at first glance. The Ponies had four forfeits, coming at 98, 105, 140 and 171 pounds. Riley LaBuda (140) re-injured his shoulder and may be out for the season. And Schaub (171) only wrestled a handful of duals, and sat out one.

But with the matches that were wrestled, the Ponies lost only three to Laurel.

"We didn't have our fire power and we gave up 24 points before we even started," Filius said. "But in the matches we wrestled, we did very well."

Bara (112) earned a 9-0 major decision, while Stadel (119) won by forfeit, Smith (130) pinned Ryan Salacinski in 4:57, Seely (135) pinned Austin Cannon in 3:42, Hinebauch (145) pinned Jesse Albrecht in 51 seconds, Pribyl (152) pinned Austin Hergenrider in 1:28, Ruttkofsky (189) pinned Trevor Howe in 1:34 and Salapich (215) earned a 14-2 major decision over Austin Boucher.

HHS had three wrestlers go undefeated this weekend. Pribyl, Hinebauch and Stadel all went 7-0 this weekend.

"I was very pleased with Kameron Pribyl," Filius said. "He had a nice weekend. So did Eli Hinebauch and Duell Stadel, those three really led us."

HHS will turn right around and get back to competition on Tuesday when they host a dual with the Class AA CMR Rustlers.
