Roy O. Haugen

Roy O. Haugen, 90, a retired school custodian, passed away Monday Feb. 21, 2011, at the Marias Care Center of natural causes. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be at a later date. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include nieces, DeeAnn Brese, Carolyn Weber, Marilyn Cline, Lillian (Wil) Smith and Linda (Dennis) Hinkle; and a sister and granddaughter in North Dakota.

He is preceded in death by his parents ,Ole and Ragna Haugen; his wife, Lillian; a son, Roy 'Skip' Haugen; and 10 brothers and sisters, all of North Dakota.

Roy was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Wyndmere, N.D., to Ole and Ragna (Olson) Haugen. After serving in the army, he was working construction and met the love of his life, Lillian Hyslop. They were married on Oct. 10, 1959, in Reno, Nev. He joked it was not a gamble but a sure thing.

They both retired from the Shelby School District as custodians.

He was a member of the Shelby Seventh Day Adventist Church and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
