It's still very early in the season, but the Havre High boys golf team got a taste of playing with the big boys on Monday afternoon.
Five HHS boys took to the difficult Meadowlark Country Club Course Monday for the first round of the 36-hole Great Falls Invitational. The tourney features all of the Class AA schools, as well as Class A Havre and Whitefish.
And after the first 18 holes, the Ponies are in last place with a team score of 367. Kalispell Glacier leads the way on the boys side with a 300, followed by Billings Senior and Billings West.
Individually, the Ponies did get a strong performance from senior Simon McCann, who shot 87. McCann's score is just 17 strokes off the lead, which is 70, and only 11 shots out of the Top 10.
Sam Lippy shot 91 for the Blue Ponies and sophomore Trey Brown, playing in only his second varsity golf tournament of his career, shot a respectable 93 on a Monday where temperatures soared to 98 degrees and the winds gusted to 30 MPH in Great Falls.
The Ponies also got a 96 from Ramsey Drew while junior David Denny shot 120.
The second round of the Great Falls Invite is set for today at Eagle Falls Golf Course.
Meanwhile, the Havre High girls varsity team competed in Lewistown on Monday, as did a handful of junior varsity players. Scores weren't available at press time.
