In a rare Monday night game, the Havre High girls basketball team did all it could to hang with the Class AA Great Falls High Bison.
In the end however, the Bison had just enough firepower to hold off the Blue Ponies.
On Monday night at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls, the Ponies fell to GFH 48-40. But the eight-point margin didn't speak to how well the Ponies played.
The two teams played a seesaw first half in which the lead changed hands several times with neither team leading by more than three points. GFH seized the lead late in the second quarter and went into halftime up 17-14.
Havre continued to play well through the rest of the game, but the Bison started the third quarter on a 10-0 run, building a 13-point lead in which Havre couldn't quite come all the way back from. Havre had its best offensive quarter in the fourth, scoring 17 points.
Still, the Ponies showed tough-nosed defense, and they battled a tough Class AA team down to the wire, on the road.
Paighton Gilman led the way for HHS with 10 points. Havre got balanced scoring with Peyton Filius adding eight points and Jaclyn Evans and Christina Mack chipping in with seven points a piece. Evans also secured a team-high nine rebounds.
The 2-7 Blue Ponies return to Central A play on Friday night when they host the Belgrade Panthers. The Ponies will also host the Livingston Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
