More swimming hardware for Havre

BUTTE — Over the years the Havre High girls and boys swim teams have found a couple of comfortable spots near the top of the state swimming ranks.

And after attending the 2011 All Class state swim meet, Friday and Saturday at the Butte YMCA in Butte, the trend continued for both teams. The Blue Pony girls earned a No. 2 finish for the second straight year with 23 points, and the Blue Pony boys earned a No. 3 finish this year with 19 points after finishing as the No. 1 team a year ago.

On the girls side of the pool, Billings Central finished No. 1 with 115 points and Hardin finished No. 3 with three. And on the boys side, Billings Central finished No. 1 with 76 points and Hardin finished No. 2 with 54.

"This was an excellent meet for our teams," Havre High head coach Chris Inman said. "Our kids swam faster than they did last year and I saw a ton of improvements from our kids. Billings Central just had a ton of kids place for them, but our kids competed hard and I am not disappointed at all in our kids."

Both the boys and girls teams saw massive improvements at the state meet.

Megan Obrecht and Kacie Johnson both placed individually for the girls. Johnson was 10th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 59.31 and Obrecht was sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.70.

The girls 200 medley relay (Brooke Jappe, Obrecht, Kacie Johnson and Katie Johnson), 200 freestyle relay (Jappe, Obrecht, Kacie Johnson, and Kaity McKnight) and 400 freestyle relay (Jappe, Katie Johnson, McKnight and Corona Sprinkle) also placed this weekend. The 200 medley team finished in 11th place with a time of 2:06.68 and the 200 freestyle team finished in 12th with a time of 1:53.40, while the 400 freestyle team finished in 11th place with a time of 4:22.44.

For the boys, Evan Flathers and Courtlan Vukasin both finished in individual races. Flathers grabbed the No. 9 spot in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.00, while Vukasin finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.50.

The 200 freestyle relay (Flathers, Greg Rhines, Sawyer Zugel and Vukasin) and 400 freestyle relay (Rhines, Flathers, Zugel and Taylor Riphenburgh) also earned points for the Ponies. The 200 freestyle team finished in eighth with a time of 1:46.63, and the 400 freestyle team finished in 10th with a time of 3:56.37.

Obrecht's time in the 100 breaststroke is her best time yet. And only a new PR would have done, because prior to the finals, only one second separated second place and sixth place. And Flathers also swam his best time in the 50 freestyle, as did Kacie Johnson in the 100 freestyle.

But the biggest improvement the Ponies saw came from Vukasin who surprised everbody in the 100 breaststroke. Vukasin shaved off seven seconds from his personal best to grab the No. 12 spot.

"I kept writing down times and just thought that I must have made a mistake," Inman said. "But it was cool for him to get in there because he works hard and is a good kid."

Overall it was a good weekend for the Ponies. They fought hard to keep up with the powerful Billings Central squads and turned in their best times of the year. And just days after exiting the pool for the season, Inman is already looking forward to next season.

"We finished on a great note," Inman said. "We took off time from Friday to Saturday and like I told the kids, we need to keep that momentum heading into next year. But our kids only swim 12 weeks out of the year and for those kids to come out and swim that well is amazing."
