Alice Arlene Hiatt

Alice Arlene Hiatt, 84, died Wednesday, Oct. 12 , 2011, at Northern Montana Care Center of natural causes.

Her viewing will be from 1 p. m. to 2 p. m., Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at 2:30 p. m., at Highland Cemetery in Havre, Mont. Memorials in Arlene's honor may be made to a charity of one's choice. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arlene was born at home on Aug. 6, 1927, in Missouri, to Ruth Mae (Boulding) and Herman Smith. She was able to attend high school by boarding with families in Martinsville, Mo., New Hampton, Mo., and graduated from high school in Gillman, Mo.

Arlene married Charles Hiatt on Nov. 23, 1946, at Olathe, Kan., The couple lived in Missouri after their marriage. In 1949, they were traveling and stopped in Havre at Pop Halter's café to eat. Arlene noticed a sign saying "waitress wanted. " Arlene asked about the job and was handed an apron and went to work, before she could even finish eating.

Arlene had hobbies including quilting and gardening. All of her children and great-grandchildren have a handmade quilt that Arlene made. She also had wonderful flower gardens throughout the years.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; one son; and one grandchild.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles, of Havre; daughters, Therese Cowdery of Havre and Sarita (Bill) Kuhn of Havre; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
