The Montana State University-Northern Rodeo Team got its spring season off to a good start over the weekend.
The Lights and Skylights were in Bozeman for one of the biggest
rodeo's of the spring, hosted by Montana State University. The Bozeman
rodeo saw teams from Northern, UGF, UM-Western, Montana State and the
University of Montana, as well as others from the region compete over
the course of three days.
In the first rodeo, Northern's Dennis Barta won the average in
steer wrestling over three days. Barta placed first in the long go and
third in the short go to take the average, while the Northern men's
team placed sixth overall.
In the second rodeo over the weekend, former Havre Blue Pony
Phillip Sutherland had a great outing, placing second overall in the
saddle bronc riding. Charlie Mack split eighth and ninth in the
bareback riding as well, and the Lights finished sixth overall in the
team standings.
On the women's side in the second event, MSU-N got outstanding
performances from three cowgirls. Lacey Davidson tied for 10th in the
breakaway roping, while former HHS standout Kassy Brough tied for 12th
in the barrel racing. Malia VandenBos was 14th in the same event.
The Lights and Skylights are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Big Sky Regionals in Helena.
The MSU-Northern men and women have five spring rodeos in all on the schedule this season.
