Thank you farmers markets vendors

Editor:

The number of farmers markets in the United States grew 17 percent between 2010 and 2011. The growing number of markets, propelled by a rising interest in local agriculture, has helped farmers markets evolve to become anchors in American communities, putting healthful food on more tables while supporting local agriculture.

According to the USDA, Havre's Saturday Market is one of the approximately 7,175 in the country and 50 in Montana. Saturday Market began in 2000, under the S.A.T.U.R.D.A.Y. Market banner with organization by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce. But there has been a very active market in Havre for many years. One of the long time vendors of the market and one-time organizer Betty Holden noted, "Since 1984 I have been a part of a farmers market in Havre."

Farmers markets play a valuable role in promoting healthy local economies and communities in Montana. While shoppers enjoy the freshness and taste of locally grown produce, and home baked items, vendors capture more of the value of their products from direct sales to their customers. Local artisans are also featured, providing them an opportuity to showcase their crafts. The character and what is unique about communities is highlighted, creating a perfect gathering place. Farmers markets showcase local food, local producers, local art and local pride.

The mission of Saturday Market is to "provide a venue for area producers and artisans to sell their products. The market brings the quality flavor of local farm produce, wonderful homespun crafts and delicious baked goods into the neighborly ambiance of Town Square creating a traditional activity for the community in the historic downtown area."

Thank you to all the vendors who support the market each week. Your dedication to the market is directly related to its success. Saturday Market has grown past the national average of 31 vendors. Thank you to the community for your support of the market each weekend.
