There is one week left in the regular season of girls basketball on the Hi-Line. And no doubt, this past week saw plenty of important games around the area.
The week started with a nonconference win by Chester/J-I over North Star in Rudyard. The Hawks upended the Knights 45-32 a pair of 15-point efforts from Stine Haaland and Jenni Ghekiere. In the loss, the Knights got 15 points and 12 rebounds by Shelby Lipp.
The action continued on Thursday, but it too was a tough night for several area squads.
In Harlem Thursday night, the Malta M-Ettes crushed the host wildcats 71-34 and in Hays, the Roy-Winifred Raiders thrashed Hays-Lodge Pole 50-39.
On Friday night, Chester/J-I kept on winning. The Hawks demolished Power 64-21 in a District 10C game. The Hawks got 11 points from Ghekiere and 10 by Haaland and 13 Hawks got into the scoring column as C/J-I kept ahold of first place in the league standings.
In a crucial 9C showdown Friday night, the Big Sandy Pioneers edged the Chinook Sugarbeeters 49-47. The Pioneers led by one point at the half, but fell behind in the third quarter. However, a 12-6 run on their home floor propelled the Pioneers to a victory and enabled them to hold on to second place in the 9C.
Molly Herron scored 16 points for Big Sandy and Hannah Williams added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Chinook got 17 points form Taryn Norby and 11 points by Makayla Farmer in the tough loss.
Friday night also saw North Star suffer its second loss of the week. The Knights fell 41-36 at Sunburst. The Knights led 21-18 at intermission but the 10C Refiners pushed through in the second half.
Jordan Spicher and Shelby Lipp each scored 10 points in nonconference loss for the Knights.
Friday night also marked the beginning of an interesting two-game stretch for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. In Shelby, the Morning Stars picked up a huge 1B win, beating the Coyotes 39-34.
Rocky Boy jumped out to a 16-6 first-quarter lead, then played great defense and held Shelby off in the second half. Sabrina Laforge, Leah Onco and Caitlyn Gamble all scored 10 points each for Rocky Boy.
But as big a win as the Morning Stars earned on Friday night, they couldn't overcome Class B's best team on Saturday. In Fairfield, the Eagles crushed the Morning Stars 71-26. Fairfield outscored Rocky Boy 50-15 in the first half and never looked back. Chanel Standing Rock and Onco combined to score 19 points for Rocky Boy in the lopsided loss. Still, the Morning Stars enter the final week of the regular season, sitting good in third place in 1B standings.
In another Class B game on Saturday, Harlem suffered a tough conference loss, 41-31 to Glasgow. The Wildcats played well, but the Scotties started off well and the Wildcats couldn't quite recover. Jaycee Werk paced the Wildcats with nine points.
Saturday also saw a third straight tough loss for the North Star Knight. This time, the Knights dropped a 46-41 decision to 7C power Roy-Winifred in Rudyard. The Raiders outscored the Knights 26-14 in the first half, and although the Knights played well in the second, they couldn't quite catch up, even with a season-high 26 points from Shelby Lipp.
Saturday night went much better for 9C powers Box Elder and Chinook.
In Heart Butte, the league-leading Bears thrashed the 10C Heart Butte Warriors 76-16. Aricka Wolf Chief led the way with 17 points, but the Bears also got 15 points by Tristan Parisian and 13 from Megan Parker.
And Chinook rebounded from a close loss earlier in the week with a thrilling win over HLP Saturday night in Chinook. The Beeters edged the T-Birds 52-50 thanks to a 22-18 comeback fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds played one of their most complete games of the season, and got 20 points form Anita Denny, 17 by Kristie Runs Above and 16 from Shayla Whitecow, but it wasn't enough to upset the Beeters. Chinook was paced by Farmer with 15 points, while Emily Dennis added eight.
