Former Havre Blue Pony and Carroll College quarterback Gary Wagner got even more playing time than he bargained for in Saturday's inaugural Dixie Gridiron Championship in St. George, Utah.
Wagner, who was named the starter for the Mountain Team over Higgins, wound up playing the entire game and scored one of just two touchdowns for his Mountain Team, which won the game over the Pacific Team, 17-13. Wagner, who was one of three Mountain players nominated as a team captain, shined in Saturday's all-star game, which was played in front of various NFL scouts, as well as a host of other professional scouts from Canada and Arena Football.
Wagner scored a touchdown on the ground and rushed for around 75 yards on the day. He also threw for roughly 200 yards, while playing all four quarters for the Mountain Team.
The strong showing in the all-star game caps off a brilliant run during Wagner's senior year. He not only led Carroll to the 2010 national championship, but he was named Frontier Conference Player of the Year as well as NAIA All-American. Wagner said recently he is hoping to participate in the University of Montana's Pro Day later in the spring as his next step in his football career.
