Ponies get back to work

The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams were not set to return to action until Jan. 7. But because of this notoriously rough winter on the Hi-Line, plans have changed.

The Pony boys and girls teams will return from the holiday break on Monday night when they make up their postponed season-opening games in Malta. The games were to take place back on Dec. 10 but were postponed because of a winter storm which pounded the area that week, which in turn resulted in poor travel conditions.

But on Monday night, the Ponies will finally get their chance to battle the Class B power. The Malta girls are unbeaten on the season and are the defending Class B state champions, while HHS comes in at 1-2 on the year, but playing well early on.

Meanwhile, the Havre boys are also 1-2 on the year, but are also playing at a high level. Havre closed out the 2010 portion of its schedule with a win in Livingston, and then a well-played loss at CMR. The Mustangs will be a test for the Ponies however. Malta is unbeaten and already has a road win over Rocky Boy to its credit.

The Pony basketball teams aren't the only ones getting back into the swing of things on Monday night. The Havre High wrestling team will also get back to work on Monday with a special Havre Match-Up at the Mat Corner, which starts at 6 p.m.

The Havre quadrangular will feature the Ponies, Class B-C powerhouses Chinook and Glasgow and wrestlers from Big Sandy. The event will be held at the Mat Corner and will feature mixed matches with all four teams in action. The Pony wrestlers will also gear up to defend their title at the Cut Bank Invitational next Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, the HHS girls will take on the M-Ettes at 6 p.m. on Monday night, then play at Lewistown on Friday night before returning home to square off against Butte Central on Saturday. The Pony boys will battle in Malta at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, then make their long-awaited home debut against Lewistown on Friday night before going back on the road to face Butte Central next Saturday.
