Damon Andrew Owens, 77, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 29, 2010, at his home with his family surrounding him.

Viewing for Damon will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. His funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the Immanuel Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Whitaker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. A fellowship will be held at the church immediately after the services at the graveside.

Memorial contributions in Damon's honor may be made to the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club, P.O. Box 1351 Havre, MT 59501. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.

Damon was born

Jan. 17, 1933, in Salt Gap, Texas, to Thomas and Josephine (Wartenbach) Owens. He was one of 13 children. He worked in the oil fields as a toolpusher and a truck driver until he was drafted into the United States Army in March 1953, where he served in the Korean War.

He was honorably discharged in February 1955. He married Berta Watson in September 1956 in Pecos, Texas, where they made their home.

He moved to Havre with his family in 1972 for oil and gas exploration and worked for Elenburg and most recently for Rock Solid Enterprises.

Together they made their home in Havre and raised their children. Damon enjoyed living in Montana. His interests were in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, spending time with his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed working with his horses.

He was a member of the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club and the Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Josephine Owens; a daughter, Julie Ann Owens; brothers, Henry, Clint, Milton, Alton, Tommy, Irvin, Charles and Guy Owens; and one sister, Ida Carlson.

Damon is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Berta Owens of Havre; his daughter, Kemi (Mark) Velk of Havre; his sons, Randy (Mary) Owens, Burt "Skip" (Darla) Owens and Damon Jr.,and "Andy" (Christy) Owens all of Havre; his sister, Hilda Bradley of Midland, Texas; two brothers, Bill (Ruby) Owens of Havre, and Jerry (Kathy) Owens of Tahoka, Texas; and 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
