HHS completes busy weekend in the pool

The Havre High boys and girls swim teams had plenty of time in the pool this weekend in Great Falls.

The Blue Ponies made two trips to the Bison Fieldhouse Pool this weekend to take on some of the state's best swimmers in two different meets.

On Friday, the Ponies competed in the Great Falls Invitational with CMR, GFH and Class A rival Hardin, and Havre showed some strength in the meet.

The Pony girls scored 107 points to finish third on Friday afternoon, and perhaps more importantly, they finished ahead of Hardin.

Individually, Kacie Johnson scored in two races for the Ponies, finishing third in the 50 freestyle (26.68) and third in the 100-meter freestyle (58.44). Katie Johnson also swam fast for the Ponies, finishing fifth in the challenging 200 IM. She finished the demanding race in 2:42.63.

Havre's best individual finish on the girls side came from Megan Obrecht in the 100 breaststroke. Obrecht swam a blazing 1:14.28 to come in second. Kaity McKnight also helped the Ponies with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke, while Samantha French did an outstanding job to place sixth in the grueling 500-meter freestyle race.

The Pony girls also made up plenty of ground in the relays. They finished second in the 200 medley relay, third in the 200 free relay and got a second and a sixth in the 400 free relay.

The HHS boys had some outstanding performances on Friday as well. Havre finished fourth in the meet with 83 points, but got outstanding individual efforts from Greg Rhines and Evan Flathers.

Rhines finished third in the 500 free with a time of 6:39.15 and fourth in the 200 free with a time of 2:21.91. And Flathers helped HHS in the shorter races, finishing fourth in the 50 free at 24.75 and he came in fifth in the competitive 100 free with a time of 51.31.

Havre got a fourth-place finish from Chinook's Taylor Riphenburg in the 100-meter backstroke, while Courtlain Vukasin added a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. The Pony relay teams also scored on Friday. HHS finished second in the 200 medley and third in the 200 free relay.

HHS was back in the pool on Saturday for the Great Falls Relays. The meet was a relay-only format with girls and boys teams in each event and a combined total team score at the end of the day. The Ponies wound up 10th in the meet, scoring 28 points.

HHS is now off until Jan. 7 when the Ponies travel to Hardin for the Class A Meet.
