Raising awareness for domestic violence

Raising awareness for domestic violence

John Kelleher

The Haven is a Havre home where victims of domestic abuse can find refuge from abusive conditions.

Spouses and children of victims, live at the Haven with, sometimes, several families sharing the home. They live at the Haven until they can put their lives together and find another place to live.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so the staff of the Havre domestic abuse program has decided this would be a great time to raise community awareness of the problem of domestic abuse while raising funds to get some much-needed equipment at the Haven.

They figure they need about $1,500 for a new refrigerator, stove and dishwasher.

The month of activities aimed at raising awareness and funds includes:

Sunday: A candlelight vigil honoring the victims of domestic abuse will begin at 7 p.m. at the District IV Human Resources Development Council building.

Volunteers will honor the victims and work on a display to be unveiled later this month for the Clothesline Project. Victims of domestic abuse will give their thoughts on their experiences, and they will be inscribed on T-shirts.

Saturday, Oct. 9: A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held at the Eagles Club starting at 6 p.m. A band will perform. For $7 a person, $15 for a family or $25 for a family of five or more, people will get a spaghetti dinner, garlic bread, salad and dessert. The proceeds will go to pay for the new appliances at the Haven. People are asked to R.S.V.P. at 265-6743.

Monday, Oct. 11: The Clothesline Project and Empty Table will be featured at Holiday Village Mall. The display will help explain the sad results of domestic abuse. The clothesline will have T-shirts designed at the vigil. The empty table will show the disruption in lives caused by domestic violence.

Saturday, Oct. 16: Crisis Line training will take place at the mall from 9 a.m. to noon. It is designed for people who would be willing to volunteer time to intervene in behalf of victims. A special program about the Clothesline Project will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A concluding candlelight vigil will be held Friday, Oct. 29, at HRDC.

Special programs will be held in the Havre schools during the month.
