With preseason tournaments behind them, area high school volleyball teams are turning the attention to conference play.
On Thursday night, the District 6C East started off with a big match between Box Elder and Big Sandy. The Pioneers won by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-23 on their home floor, and they got four kills and two digs from MacKenzie Jenkins to lead the way. The Bears were led by Rebecca Rosette with two kills and two aces.
In a nonconference match Thursday night, the North Star Knights beat the Sunburst Refiner in five games in Gildford. The match could be a preview of two of the top teams in the Northern C, and the Knights pulled it out in dramatic fashion, by scores of 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 15-10.
Coming from two sets down, the Knights got 12 kills and five blocks from Kali Twedt.
Friday night's action wasn't so kind to the Knights. Again they played a Northern C powerhouse in Gildford, but it was the visiting Chinook Sugarbeeters who came out on top by scores of 25-21, 11-25, 25-18 and 25-21.
Kayla Hanson had 13 kills and three aces for the Beeters, while Shelby Lipp had 13 kills and a solo block for the Knights.
Box Elder dropped its second match of the weekend on Friday night. The Bears fell to Centerville in a heartbreaking five-set match by scores of 25-15, 25-11, 21-25, 20-25 and 15-7.
Box Elder did well to rally from two sets down, but the Bears came up short in the fifth set. Erika Wolf Chief had 11 kills, seven aces and four digs to pace the Bears in the loss.
In Class B action on Friday night, the steadily improving Rocky Boy Morning Stars were downed by the Cascade Badgers by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 27-25. Tennae Singer had four kills, six assists and six aces to lead the Morning Stars.
Rocky Boy also suffered a tough defeat on Saturday night in Cut Bank. In another 2B match, the Morning Stars lost by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-17.
Chinook and Big Sandy continued to roll through the weekend.
Saturday in Chinook, the Betters took care of Valier by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-16.
Chinook was dominant in the final two sets of the match and got 13 kills and five aces from Kayla Hanson in the win. Taryn Norby added 13 digs and Katie Diemert had 16 assists.
Big Sandy also swept Hays-Lodge Pole in three games Saturday night in Big Sandy. The Pioneers beat the T-Birds by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-12.
The Pioneers were paced by Brooke Leader who had 13 assists, seven aces and two digs. HLP was led by Alyssa Flying.
Saturday night also saw the Chester/J-I Hawks earn a huge 6C West win over powerhouse Simms.
In the rivalry match in Chester, the Hawks downed the Tigers by scores of 27-25, 14-25, 27-29, 25-22 and 16-14. The match was high drama throughout with both teams having multiple match points before the Hawks finally put it away in the decisive fifth game.
C/J-I got 12 kills and three aces from Larisa Lybeck while Jenni Ghekiere and Jimi Sangwin each had 16 digs.
