HHS golfers get back on the course

The Havre High boys and girls golf teams finally beat the weather.

After missing last weekend's Browning Invitational, and a rainy week of practice, the Ponies were back on the course on Saturday in Lewistown.

Havre saw good competition at the Lewistown Invitational held at the Judith Shadows Golf Club.

On the girls side, the Blue Ponies got a first-ever Top 10 from freshman Katie Beck, who shot a solid 107. In just her third tournament of her career, Beck finished in seventh place overall, but was just five strokes out of fifth place.

HHS had just two girls in the tournament. The Ponies were missing top golfer Rebekah Martin, but Boston Swenson added a solid 121 to the HHS total.

Livingston ran away with the girls team title in Lewistown. The Rangers had five of the Top 10 individual spots, including first through third place.

In a loaded boys field, the Blue Ponies were a little out-gunned Saturday, but junior Simon McCann shot a team-best 93 for 18 holes. McCann has been consistent throughout the season for the Ponies.

The Havre boys also got a 103 from Sam Lippy and a 106 from Ramsey Drew. Spencer Morkrid carded a 112 and freshman David Denny added a 116.

Belgrade dominated the boys tournament Saturday. The Panthers had four Top 10's overall.

The boys tournament was a preview of the Central A meet later this month, which will also be held in Lewistown.

Saturday's tournament also featured junior varsity teams from Great Falls High and CMR.

The Ponies will be at home Saturday to host the Havre Invitational. The tournament is slated to start at 9:30 a.m. at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
