Robert J. "Bob" Toner, 93, a Rudyard area farmer who loved gardening, died of natural causes on Sept. 28, at the Northern Montana Care Center in Havre.
Bob was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Graceville, Minn. He came to Montana in 1935 to farm with an uncle.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and served in six invasions during World War II. He received his honorable discharge in 1945 and returned to Montana.
He married June Wilson on May 12, 1949. They lived in Rudyard and farmed until 1976. After his retirement, Bob continued to work with his son at Rudyard Tire-Rama. He also enjoyed his gardens and caring for stray cats. He had been active in the Havre Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, June Toner of Rudyard; three sons, Bob (Karen) Toner of Rudyard, Robin (Kate) Toner of Havre, and Gene Toner of Springfield, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Christine; and two brothers, Bud and James.
Bob was cremated per his wishes. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester.
