WALTER JOHN STARK obituary

World War II Navy veteran Walter John Stark, 87, of Great Falls and formerly of Havre, a retired material supervisor for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroad, died of a head injury sustained in a fall Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at his home.

Services will be held Friday, December 19, 2008, 2 p.m. at The Lodge in Great Falls. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Walter J. Stark was born Nov. 30, 1921, to Louis and Emma (Platt) Stark in Sayk Rapids, Minn., where he was raised and educated. He served in the Navy during WWII in both theaters on LST landing crafts. Walt married Edna Brekkestran on Oct. 15, 1949, in Sauk Rapids. He worked for 42 years for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroad in the material department as a supervisor until retiring in 1981 in Havre, Mont. Walt served as an elder and bookkeeper for St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Havre, and also tirelessly cared for the lawn and did repairs at the church. Walt was an avid bowler for many years and after retiring became an avid golfer. During the summers, he enjoyed umpiring men's and women's softball games in Havre. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Edna Stark of Great Falls; a daughter, Pamela Stark (Bob Good) of Seattle; a son, Dewey (Bobbi) Stark of Great Falls; and a brother, Leroy Stark of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert Stark and Harold Stark; and a sister, Myrtle Walk. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
