Meadowlark unkind to Blue Pony golfers

The first 18 holes of the Havre High boys and girls golf teams' season were, to say the least, a learning experience. Both the HHS boys and girls teed off the 2008 season in hot conditions at one of Montana's most challenging courses, Meadowlark Country Club in Great Falls on Monday afternoon. The HHS boys shot a 369 on the first day of the Great Falls Invitational which places the Blue Ponies 17th out of 18 teams in the field that includes every Class AA school, as well as Class A counterparts Whitefish and Lewistown. Individually, all four HHS boys struggled, with no one breaking 80. Senior Jeremy Jensen shot an 81 to lead HHS and junior Brett Normandy came in with an 83. Senior Myles Mazurkiewicz was next with an 83, and in his first varsity round, junior Cody Brunk came home with a 112. Four players broke par on Monday, and Billings West' Jake Hedge leads the way with a sizzling 4-under-par 68. In the team competition, Kalispell's Glacier High is well in front of the pack with a low score of 293. Meanwhile, the three Blue Pony girls participating in the tourney also had their ups and downs on Monday. Senior Tabitha Beck, playing in her fourth straight Great Falls invite, fired a 95 to lead the HHS trio. Meanwhile, junior Courtney Kinholt came in with a 109 in her first varsity round and Rebecca Martin rounded out the scoring for Havre with a 152. CMR and Bozeman are tied for the first-day lead on the girls side, each scoring a 337. Class A standout White- fish is also in the team title hunt, just one stroke behind the Hawks and Rustlers. The Great Falls Invitational wraps up today with 18 holes at Eagle Falls Golf Club.
