AMOS FIRST RAISED, SR., obituary

Amos First Raised, Sr., 90, a retired farmer and rancher, died Tuesday, July 10, of natural causes at the Hi-Line Retirement Center in Malta.

Wake and Rosary service was at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the Red Whip Community Center in Fort Belknap. Mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Red Whip with burial to follow in the Horn Family Cemetery, east of Fort Belknap. First Raised was born in Fort Belknap to Henry and Alice (Gone High) First Raised, Sr. On February 2, 1917. His Indian Name was Apa-eyanga, which means Warrior Charges Something. First Raised was raised and educated at Fort Belknap. He married Melvina Horn and they had nine children. Melvina died in 1963. First Raised worked as a farmer and rancher in the Turner area for over 32 years. He retired in 1989 to Harlem and moved to Malta in 1992. He was fluent in speaking the native Assiniboine language and played the harmonica, enjoyed rodeos and attending pow-wow's. First Raised enjoyed having his family around him. Survivors include his children; Amos First Raised Jr. And Frank First Raised, both of Fort Belknap; daughters Loretta Retan of Chinook, Arleda Hopkins of Great Falls and Julia Doney of Harlem; brother, Thomas First Raised Sr. Of Las Vegas; 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Melvina; parents, Hank and Alice First Raised Sr.; brothers, Bryan, Henry Jr., James; sisters, Josephine Johnson, Katherine Windy Boy, Margie Bercier, Mary Blackbird; daughters, Marlene and Belva; sons, Bryan and Jesse; Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
