CHARLES “SIMMER” DOG SLEEPING RAINING BIRD obituary

Charles “Simmer” Dog Sleeping Raining Bird, 54, whose Indian name was O KI MAHW WAH TI K, meaning Center Pole, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at his home in Rocky Boy of natural causes.

His wake service began on Monday, May 14, 2007, and continued through Tuesday at the Ivan Raining Bird residence at Parker Canyon. Native American services began at 10 a.m. today also at the Ivan Raining Bird residence at Parker Canyon. His burial will follow at the Rocky Boy Cemetery. Charles “Simmer” was born April 26, 1954, to Ivan Raining Bird and Patricia Dog Sleep Raining Bird at Fort Belknap. He attended and graduated from Box E l d e r S c h o o l s . After high school he a t t e n d e d E a s t e r n M o n t a n a College in B i l l i n g s where he received a scholarship for basketball and football. He then attended United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, N. D. He later moved home to be with his family, and attended Stone Child College where he graduated with an associate degree in human services. After graduating from Stone Child College he attended Montana State University-Northern and graduated with a bachelor's degree in human services. Simmer was employed most of his life, with Burlington Northern Railroad when he was 17 years old, later he worked for Roy Boy Schools as a janitor. Simmer also worked with the state and on the roads department as a flagger. Most recently he worked with Rocky Boy Tribal Courts as a youth counselor. In his spare time Simmer liked watching bull riding and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, visiting with his grandchildren, listening to country music and laughing and having a good time. He was well known by the community and will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his father Ivan Raining Bird, his grandparents Art and Mabel Raining Bird and a brother Dennis Sangrey Sr. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Dog Sleep Raining Bird of Rocky Boy; wife, Vickie Corchran of Rocky Boy; brothers, Ivan John (Donna) Raining Bird, Gregory Raining Bird, Joshua (Carly) Raining Bird, Garren Denny, Gregory (Moose) Denny, all of Rocky Boy, Daniel (Wanda) Raining Bird of Harlem, Gerry Raining Bird of Portland, Ore., Pernell Raining Bird of Havre, Steven (Rebekah) Raining Bird of Bismarck, Christopher Tendore of Portland and Larry Hopkins of Wolf Point; sisters, Theda (Tuffer Mitchell) Raining Bird of Great Falls, Thelma (Tim Nault Sr.) Stanley, Delphine (Mike) Sangrey all of Rocky Boy and Susan (Dion Lodge) Raining Bird of Portland; and nephew, Jacob LaMere of Rocky Boy; and 10 grandchildren. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
