FORT BELKNAP John “Jack” “Bruiser” Brown, 85, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Northern Montana Care Center from natural causes.
Wake services began on Monday, May 14, 2007, at 5 p.m. at the Red Whip Center with rosary recited at 7 p.m. F u n e r a l Mass will be today at 11 a. m. in Red Whip Center with burial following at the Brown F a m i l y Cemetery at Three Buttes with military honors. Jack was born on Sept. 25, 1921 in Hays to James Brown I and Ella (Perry) Brown. He was raised in the Hays area and attended St. Paul's Mission Schools. Jack served with the U. S. Army, Company M of the 163rd Infantry from Sept. 16, 1940 until Aug. 5, 1945. He was in battles and campaigns in Papuan, New Guinea and Southern Philippines. Jack received the following decorations and citations, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star and the Distinguished Unit Badge 163rd Infantry Company. He returned to Fort Belknap in 1945 and ranched and did mechanic work in the area, later at Wolf Point and retired from working in California and moved back to Fort Belknap 22 years ago. He was married to Maxine Bigby, they divorced and he married Myrna Owens, they divorced and Jack was married to Margaret Miller of California. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Walter, Edward, Alfred, Leslie, Robert, Jim II, Perry and William Brown; sisters, Dora Brown Head, Edna Brown The Boy Mann, Lillian Brown McConnell, Mary, Rosie, and Helen Brown. Jack is survived by his wife, Margaret Miller Brown; sons, William “Billie” Brown and John Brown both of Calif.; daughters, Doris Brown, Elizabeth Jane Brown, Ella Brown, all of California; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Brown, Sr. Of Fort Belknap; numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
