Paul “Scruff” Edward Hofland, 64, of Havre died Monday, April 16, 2007, at Northern Montana Hospital of natural causes.
His funeral service will be held at 4:30 p. m. Friday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rowlie Hutton officiating. His burial will be held at Highland Cemetery in Great Falls on Saturday at 10a. m. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the West Side VFW immediately after the graveside service. Paul was born Jan. 7, 1946, in Great Falls to Albert and Thelma (England) Hofland. He received his education in Great Falls, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1965, where he was ordered to active duty serving on the USS Ranger in Vietnam in 1967. He was honorably discharged in April of 1969. In 1969, Paul met and married Cheryl Lacy in Great Falls. They divorced in 1996 but still remained close friends. In 1968, Paul went to work for The Great Northern Railway, moving with the railroad in 1974 to Livingston, where he raised his family until moving again with the railroad to Havre in 1989. He remained employed until his health started failing and he retired in July of 2006. Paul enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, gardening and helping kids work on derby and stock cars. In his later years he enjoyed wood working. Paul also enjoyed dining out or having coffee with his friends. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, two sister inlaws; three brother in-laws; one nephew and an infant brother. Survivors include his children: Tim (Robyn) Hofland of Pinedale, Wyo., Mark (Tammy) Hofland of Livingston, Doreen (Brian) Smith of Havre and Trent (Lorrie) Hofland of Havre; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert England of Browning and Eric (Barbara) Hofland of Great Falls; sisters, Faye Lund of Charlo, Edith (Cyril) Jacobson of Great Falls, Loucille Knapstad of Kennewick, Wash., Alberta (Melvin) Knapstad of Great Falls, Velma (Vernon) Peck of Great Falls and Margie (Rick) Pegar of Kenmore, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews; good friend and mentor, Jerry Malco of Havre; and special friends, Dottie and Jim of Gildford and Katie of Havre. Memorial contributions in Paul's honor may be made to American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver, CO 80231, or to a memorial of one's choice. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
