KATHARINE LOVELL obituary

Katharine O. “Katie” Lovell, 83, of Havre died March 26, 2007, at Northern Montana Care Center from natural causes.

Her funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church in Havre. Vigil services will held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church. Katie was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Havre to Chester Eli and Hazel Mary (Webb) Atwood. Katie was raised in Valier and graduated from Valier High School in 1940. She went on to attend the University of Montana and graduated from Gonzaga University and Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in Spokane, Wash., in 1945. During her training in Spokane, she met a handsome young doctor named Malcolm Lovell, who was completing his residency there. They were married in July of 1946 in Spokane. They spent the first couple of years of their marriage in Missoula and eventually moved to Havre, where her husband started his medical practice and Katie raised their children. Katie started her nursing career at Havre High School as the school nurse, which she held for 23 years. During this time, she was also very much involved in the community. She was active in the St. Jude's Parish Council, Catholic Daughters and Community Concert Association. She acted as the president of the Hill County Medical Auxiliary and was a member of the Montana Heart Association Board, president of the Montana Medical Auxiliary, and member of the Hilltop Recovery Board, cancer education committee and American Red Cross Blood Drawing committee. She was a sponsor of the Candy Stripers and the Red Coats at the Northern Montana Hospital. Katie was also honored as Beta Sigma Phi's “Lady of the Year” for all of her community service. Upon retirement, Katie continued her love for nursing by spending many summers working as a nurse through Glacier National Park. Katie loved spending time with her grandchildren and was a well-known fan of the Havre Blue Ponies. Katie was compassionate and kind and had a vibrant smile and sense of humor. Katie was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; husband in 1980; and son, Joe in 2003. Survivors include her sons, Dr. James (Joan) Lovell of San Diego, Calif., and Jeff (Sun) Lovell of El Paso, Texas; daughters, Katherine Shrauger and Patricia (Larry) Tilleman of Havre; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made in Katharine's name to the special care unit, c/o Northern Montana Care Center, 24 13th St. W., Havre, MT 59501.
