Mary Evelyn Higgins, 96, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Rocky Mountain Care Center in Helena of natural causes.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Home with Pastor Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the Eagles immediately after the graveside service. Evelyn was born April 8, 1910, in Mondamin, Iowa, to Charles and Ida Mae (Arbaugh) Stowell. Her family moved to Havre in 1917 and her father purchased a farm northwest of Havre. Evelyn was raised and educated in the Havre area. She married Floran E. Higgins on Feb. 16, 1929, and they continued to operate her parents' farm. Evelyn was a very outgoing and friendly person. She was an avid horse woman and enjoyed riding. She also was very talented in her needlework and crocheting afghans. Evelyn was a member of the Fifth Avenue Christian Church and the Eagles Auxiliary. She and her husband, Floran, enjoyed hunting in Lincoln every fall. After her husband died in 1972, Evelyn remained on the farm and leased out the land. She later moved into Havre and lived at the Eagles Manor. In the fall of 2001, she moved to Helena to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Jackie in 1960 and her husband Floran in 1972. Survivors include her son Clifford (Carol) Higgins of Helena; five grandchildren, Evelyn Gurnea (Tom) of Spokane, Wash., Debby Martin of Spokane, Wash., Mike (Tami) Higgins of Niceville, Fla., Kelli (Bill) Campbell of Brady and Jackie Bockman of Helena; 11 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions in Evelyn's honor can be made to the North Central Senior Citizens Center, 2 Second St. W., Havre, MT 59501. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
