Carol Jean “Kay” Manaras, 85, of Havre died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at her residence of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place and her memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Gail Wheatley officiating. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the church immediately after the services at the graveside. Kay was born March 17, 1921, in Helena to Clarence and Vera (Sinclair) Hanscen. She was raised and educated in Helena and graduated from Helena High School. Kay moved to Havre to attend Northern Montana College. It was in Havre that she met Thomas Manaras. Kay graduated with her degree in education. Kay and Thomas were married in March of 1944 at Bakersfield, Calif., when Thomas came home from the war. The couple returned to Havre, where Kay worked as an English teacher for Havre Public Schools at the junior high and Thomas ran the Fair Hotel. Kay retired from teaching and went into business with her daughter-in nlaw Lindsay Manaras in which they co-owned and operated the Atrium Fabrics and Quilting for 11 years. Tom and Kay later purchased the Super 8 Motel and operated that business for a few years. Kay was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church for more than 60 years. She participated in the St. Marks Guild. She also was a member of the Soroptomist and American Association of University Women, volunteered at the Havre-Hill County Public Library and was a member of the Hi-Line Quilt Guild. Kay was wonderful quilter and an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Thomas Manaras of Havre; children, Steve (Lindsay) Manaras of Columbia Falls, John (Susan) Manaras of Brookline, Ma., David Manaras and Dan Manaras, both of Seattle, Wash., and Jan (Dan) Mundy of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Shirley Siegenthaler of State College, Pa.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson. Memorial contributions in Kay's honor may be made to Montana State University- Northern or to Havre Soroptomist. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
