MALTA Harry D. Sawyer, 87, retired grocer and past owner of Harry's Confectionery in Malta, died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at the Phillips County Hospital.
His memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday at Adams Memorial Chapel in Malta. Cremation has taken place. Interment of his ashes will be in the Malta Cemetery. Harry was born Dec. 15, 1919, to Jim and Cora (Prentice) Sawyer of Malta. After graduating from Malta High School in 1938, he worked for Safeway. He married Gail Sandvig of Dodson in 1941. He worked as a shipbuilder in Portland, Ore., during World War II and then returned to Malta to manage the Safeway store and open Harry's Confectionery. In 1955, Harry and his family moved to Havre, where he owned the Super Ice Cream Shop and continued to work for Safeway. After five years at B&B Grocery in Polson, he moved to Moscow, Idaho, in 1968 and worked at Clyde's IGA for 17 years. Harry married Delma Carter of Potlatch, Idaho, in 1973. He retired in 1984. After Delma and his son's deaths in 1998 he returned to Malta. Harry was preceded in death by five siblings; two wives; and his son, Leslie Sawyer. Survivors include his daughter, Darlene (Jerry) Pugh; twin sister, Helen Wombold of Malta; seven grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; stepsons, Kenny (Jeri), Chuck (Carol), and Jimmy Carter, all of the Potlatch/Moscow, Idaho, area and their families. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge or arrangements.
