LEWIS SHORTMAN obituary

FORT BELKNAP Lewis Ray Quincy Shortman, 59, known as “Poto” to family and friends, a firefighter, welder and longtime employee of BIA Forestry, died Friday after a valiant fight against cancer.

A wake service will begin at 5 p. m. Tuesday in the Recreation Center at Hays with rosary at 7 p. m. His funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Recreation Center with burial following in the Shortman Family Cemetery at Hays. Lewis was born Dec. 6, 1947, at Fort Belknap Agency to Bill and Myrtle (Doney) Shortman. He was raised by his grandparent at Hays. Lewis attended school at the Mission in Hays and Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. Lewis loved the outdoors, his horses, and loved racing horses. He was also a champion weightlifter. Lewis' survivors include his companion and best friend, Cora Davis and their son, Sean Walker, of Fort Belknap; his sons, Lewis R. (Rena) Quincy Jr. Of Pablo, Bill (Dawnita) Quincy of Hays, James Quincy of Billings and Kenny Brown of Great Falls; daughters, Galela Cobell of Browning, Cheryl Horn (Victor) Passes of Hardin, Linda Cochran of Spokane, Wash., Donna (Pete) Coffee of Partial, N. D., and Raylyn (Greg) Desse of Tennessee; brothers, Jack (Geisla) Quincy of Vancouver, Wash., Pat (Sharon) Quincy, Gaylord (Chris) Quincy all of Hays and Phillip Shortman of Fort Belknap; sisters, Helen (Rod) Jones of Vancouver, British Columbia; twin sister Lois (Dennis) Lussier of Red Lake, Minn., Sharon (Bill) Cole of Georgia, Rose Odgen of Pendleton, Ore., Myrna Guardipee and Lois Shortman both of Fort Belknap, and Wilma Lavendure of Billings; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
