LILLIAN PHALEN obituary

Lillian Margaret (Holst) Phalen, 91, of Havre died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at her home in Havre.

Rosary for Lillian will be held at the Saint Jude's Catholic Church at 7 p. m. Wednesday. Her funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Kuper Memorial Cemetery at Chinook. Lillian wanted her friends and family not to mourn, but to remember her by taking a walk or ride in the Bear Paw Mountains. Lillian Phalen was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Chinook to Gustavus and Katherine (Schnider) Holst. After graduating from Chinook High School, she attended Northern Montana College in Havre and received her teaching certificate. Lillian taught school at Warrick. While teaching and living in the Bear Paw Mountains, she met John Phalen. They were married in June 1936. Lillian and John ranched in the Bear Paw Mountains. Lillian retired from the ranch in 1981 and moved to Havre. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church and Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Margaret; sisters, Anna Sivertsen and Kay Kane; and brother, Clarence Holst. Survivors include her son, Ambrose (Peggy) Phalen of Helena; granddaughter, Sonia (Cody) Powell of Chinook; greatgranddaughter, Allison Marie Powell of Chinook; brother, Walter (Bobbie) Holst of Hamilton; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Lillian Phalen's name to St. Jude's Catholic Church and the Havre-Hill County Library. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
