FLORENCE CAPTURE obituary

FORT BELKNAP Florence Marie (Longknife) Capture, 87, Assiniboine Indian name Mahdu- Maz meaning “Iron Braid”; died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Northern Montana Hospital due to natural causes.

Her funeral Mass was scheduled for today at 10 a.m. at Red Whip Center with burial following at the Hi-way Cemetery. A wake began at 5 p.m. Thursday with rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Red Whip Center. Florence was a full-blood Assiniboine Indian born to John and Josie (Brandt) Longknife on July 31, 1919, at Fort Belknap Agency. She was raised on Fort Belknap and attended school at St. Paul's Mission. She was a very traditional woman, believing in her Indian ways and spoke her native Assiniboine language fluently. Florence was a devoted Catholic. She worked for IHS for 35 years as a nurse's aid and later was an excellent cook. Florence loved powwows, loved her grandchildren and would give gifts and money. Over the years, she worked with her husband managing the family ranch and would delivery new born calfs and feed the livestock. Florence is survived by her daughters, Faye Filesteel and Jolene Buck-Dillon both of Fort Belknap, Diane Buck of Denver and Bebiana Capture-Wilson of Prineville, Ore.; sons, Duane Buck Sr. Of Fort Belknap, Medric Buck of Harlem; adopted sons Fred Perry of Butte and Ervin Doney Sr. Of Hays; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and three nephews: Frank Plumage of Moses Lake, Wash., John Plumage of Kellogg, Idaho, and Roger Longknife Jr. Of Hays; and a cousin, Hamilton “Doc” Longknife of Lodge Pole, who is one of the last full-blood Assiniboine Indian. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
