KENNETH GILMORE obituary

CHINOOK Kenneth Gilmore, 87, carpenter, ferry operator and a cowboy, passed away at his home south of Chinook on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Alice Nash Memorial Cemetery at the Lone Tree Bench with military honors. Kenneth was born in Geraldine on April 21, 1919, to Pearl and Josie (Good) Gilmore. His family moved several times, winding up 80 miles south of Chinook in the Missouri River badlands. On April 13, 1942, Kenneth was inducted in the U. S. Army. He was very proud veteran, having served with the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion all during the war. His battalion fought in six of the seven campaigns in the European Theater. They had the distinction of being the fastest moving, most accurate firing battalion in the European Theater. When he returned on Oct. 12, 1945, he moved back to the badlands and began working for Bryan D. O'Connell. On Sept. 18, 1947, he married Leona Sanford in Havre. Leona and Kenneth have spent their lives in Blaine County. Kenneth operated the McClelland Ferry from 1967 to retirement in 1994. After retiring, he enjoyed building useful items for his family and being with his family. Kenneth is survived by his wife of 59 years, Leona Gilmore of Chinook; son, Dale (Deb) Gilmore of Chinook; daughter, Linda (Mick) Thompson of Chinook; grandchildren, Rhonda, Kenneth, Carrie, Amanda, Beau, Leve and Casey of Chinook; eight great-grandchildren of Chinook; brother, Meredith (Madeleine) Gilmore of Chinook; sister-in-law, Marion Gilmore of Chinook; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Waldon and Eldon Gilmore; and sisters, Annie Gilmore, Zeal Harlan and Thelma Hertel. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
