CHINOOK Leo W. “Sonny” Gist, 75, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Sweet Home in Chinook from natural causes.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Sonny was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Havre to Leo V. and Pauline H. (Boehmer) Gist. He attended country school, Chinook schools and graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1947. Sonny was involved with the Gist Family Ranch on Bullwhacker Creek, Cow Creek in the Missouri Breaks. Sonny participated in rodeos as saddle bronco rider and was an allaround rodeo cowboy. He loved to ride horses. He married Joan Butcher in 1957 and they later divorced. Sonny's survivors include his daughter, Susan (Ron) Fox of Turner; sons, Bill Gist of Wrenshall, Minn., and Vern Gist of Green Bay, Wis.; brother, Jack Gist of Chinook; sisters Frances Hermes of Snohomish, Wash., Esther Sazzi of Silt, Colo., and Catherine Morgan of Chinook; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
