ANACORTES, Wash. - Helen Elizabeth Klies, 93, of Anacortes, Wash., died Friday, April 21, 2006, at San Juan Rehab and Care Center in Anacortes.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, at the Anacortes Lutheran Church, with interment at Highland Cemetery in Havre.
Helen was born on February 16, 1913 in Moorehead, Minn., to Norwegian immigrants, Ove and Oline (Borde) Sather. She and her four siblings were raised in Havre.
As a young woman, Helen was employed as a sales clerk in Havre where she met Emil. They were married in Denver, Colo., in 1945 and lived in Sunburst, where he worked with Texaco. They moved to Anacortes in 1958 when Emil was transferred to the Anacortes Texaco Refinery.
Emil and Helen had a commitment to each other rarely seen in our modern world. Although Helen spent the last three years of her life in the San Juan Rehab and Care Center, she and Emil saw each other nearly every day.
Helen was known for her deep and abiding Christian faith and her love of and loyalty to family and friends. She was a dedicated homemaker and a gracious hostess and always made guests feel welcome. In earlier years, she was active in her church and in the ladies' circle and was always one to lend those less fortunate, a helping hand or a kind word.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Emil, and her brothers, Melvin, Arnold, and Orville Sather.
Survivors include her brother and sisters-in-law, James and Aileen Sather, and LaVon Sather; many nieces and nephews; many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and many good friends, neighbors and caregivers.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. in Anacortes, Wash.
