LEO BROCKIE obituary

HARLEM - Leo “Baby Boy” Brockie Jr., whose Gros Ventre name Naw-Wos means “My Bear,” 68, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls of natural causes.

A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today in Red Whip Center at Fort Belknap Agency. A funeral Mass will be at held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Harlem High School gymnasium. Burial will follow in Fort Belknap Agency Cemetery.

Leo was born Sept. 17, 1937, to Leo and Alma (Skinner) Brockie at Fort Belknap Agency. He was a 1955 graduate of Harlem High School and alumnus of Northern Montana College. He served in the Montana Air National Guard.

Leo worked 18 years as an employment assistant officer and superintendent for BIA at Rocky Boy's and Fort Berthhold, N.D., reservations. He was also a teacher for the Hays-Lodge Pole Schools and superintendent for Hays Elementary School. Leo was also a past Montana Indian Educator of the Year and served two terms on the Fort Belknap Community Council. Most recently, he taught Native American studies at Fort Belknap Community College.

Leo's greatest passion was his grandchildren, Truth and Titan. He very much loved being a grandfather. Leo was an avid Harlem Wildcat fan and followed the basketball teams closely. He was known as “Mr. Wildcat.” Leo enjoyed attending ceremonial and community events at Fort Belknap.

He also liked to go to powwows and would travel all over to watch them. Leo also enjoyed golfing, hunting and crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Myron Brockie; and sister, Shirley Brockie.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Harlem; sons, Terry (Tawnya) Brockie of Fort Belknap Agency and Tim Brockie of Harlem; grandchildren, Truth and Titan; and brother, Theodore Skinner of Fort Belknap.
