BENJAMIN CARRYWATER obituary

HAYS - Benjamin ”Toady“ Carrywater, 69, died at his home north of Hays of natural causes on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005.

A wake and rosary were held Friday night in the Mission Recreation Center. A funeral Mass was held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Recreation Center. Burial was to follow in the Mission Cemetery with military honors.

Ben was born on May 20, 1936, at Fort Belknap Agency to Moses and Annie (Sleeping Bear) Carrywater. He was raised in the Hays area and attend school at Pierre, S.D., St. Paul's Mission and Hays Public School. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict.

Ben worked for the Miller Brothers Ranch and Art McLeish Ranch in the Bear Paw Mountains. He also worked for the Kralich Meat Co. in Havre, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and was a firefighter and an oiler for the mines. Ben was a hard worker and worked all his life.

Ben enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren.

He married Valmarie Lodge on June 7, 1961, in Havre.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daley James Carrywater; sister, Nellie Doney; and brothers, Ezra, James and Daley Carrywater.

Survivors include his wife, Valmarie Carrywater of Hays; daughters, Cindy (Tom), Theresa (George), Patti (Hank), Judy (Greg); and sons, Benjamin and Stacy (Cindy) of Hays; sisters, Joann Favel of Rocky Boy, Shirley White of Hays and Mary Ann Kezar of Great Falls; 26 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
