LILLIAN FOX obituary

HAYS - Lillian Theresa Talks Different Fox, 82, whose Assiniboine name Pahazi Wiya means "Yellow Hair Woman" and Gros Ventre name Aki-See-Itha means "Little Woman," died surrounded by her family after a short illness on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at the Phillips County Hospital in Malta.

A vigil began at 1 p.m. today at her residence with the wake at 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Mission Recreation Center. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mission Center with burial following in Lodge Pole Cemetery.

Lily was born April 20, 1923, to Ira and Mary (Big Beaver) Talks Different at home in Brookside area near Lodge Pole. She was raised in Lodge Pole during her childhood and the family later moved to Hays. She attended school at the boarding school for a short time, later attending day school at Hays. Lily spent time with her grandparents as a child, where she developed a love for outdoors and was handed down traditional ways, including gathering medicines and picking sweet grass and berries. She loved horseback riding and swimming as a child. She was among the first girls to be given the privilege to join the dancing circle in the traditional way. She enjoyed rock picking and finding Indian artifacts like arrowheads and hand tools. She worked as a cook for a few area ranches and worked as a housekeeper at Kern's store during her early childhood.

She married her true love, Quentin Roy Fox Sr., on April 22, 1946, in Hays. Lily and Quentin had six children and also took their nieces, nephews and other children as their own. Lily and Quentin raised their children with the values of respect, generosity, kindness, and concern for the wellbeing of others. She was the core of her family and loved family gatherings. Her door was always open to all to come in and have a cup of coffee or a meal. She enjoyed powwows, Indian music, sewing, crocheting, bingo, visiting friends and family young and old, and finding a way to win at solitaire every time. Lily also loved some very special pet dogs. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and supported whatever endeavors they pursued.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Agnes (Joe) Blackcrow, Katherine Fox, Elizabeth (Mike Doney) Fox, Rebecca (Ted) Standing Bear, all of Hays, Margaret (John R.) Strike of Fort Belknap and Brenda (Charles Varela) Farnell) of Illinois; sons, Robert (Peggy) Fox of Hays and Paul (Lisa) Never Misses a Shot of Fort Belknap; sisters, Irene (Lindy) Doney of Hays and Ruby Grant of Fort Belknap; and nephew, James Cochran of Harlem; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Quentin Fox Sr.; son, Quentin "Sacker" Fox Jr.; first grandson, Quentin Joseph Blackcrow; sister, Louise Leal; and brother, nephew and son, William "Bobby" Talks Different, Sr.
