LORNA GRANT obituary

HAYS - Lorna "Honey" Barbara Grant, 64, of Hays, whose Indian name was Ba'a tho-Tha meaning Red Fox Woman, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, due to a car accident.

Her funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Mission Gymnasium with burial following in Mission Cemetery. Wake and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. today in the Mission gymnasium.

Honey was born to the late Carl and Viola May (Doney) Grant at Fort Belknap Hospital on June 4, 1942. She attended the Mission School and graduated in 1962. She graduated from Billings Beauty School in 1964. Later years she attended Fort Belknap College, Northern Montana College and Salish Kootenia College in Flathead, where she graduated with a registered nursing degree in 1993. Lorna was currently working as a public health and WIC nurse.

Honey was a strong believer in traditional ways. She believed in using herbs for medicine and healing in the natural way. She was an enrolled Gros Ventre who completed her fourth season in the Sundance lodge and she continued to dance for the health of her family. Honey was an avid star quilt maker and she enjoyed smoking and drying meat. Her favored pastimes were playing bingo and machines and taking care of all her grandchildren. She was very proud of her Gros Ventre and Little Shell ancestry.

Lorna married James Sorrell in 1970 and they divorced in 1980.

Honey was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Mikeula Grant; son, James "Jimbo" Sorrell; sisters, Gail Grant, Florence Rolls, Sybil Grant and Violet Grant; brother, George Grant; and sister-in-law, Cecelia Nez Perce Grant.

Survivors include her sons, Mitchell (Brenda) Grant Sorrell of Arlee, Bruce (Susie) Grant of Havre, Eldred (Annette) Grant of Hays, Shawn R. (Sheila) Grant of Lawrence, Kan., Skyblue Jesse Low Grant of the family home in Hays; daughters, Mikealinda (Anthony Shambo) Grant Viola Grant, O'Shawna (Gary) LaMere and Shawnda Ray (Joseph) Doney, all of Hays; brother, Bruce "Zeke" Grant of Seattle, Wash.; sister, Carol G. (Wallace) Doney of Hays; adopted brother, Joe (Alpha) Ironman of Lodgepole; adopted sisters, Melvina Snow of Fort Belknap and Gloria Blackcrow of Hays; numerous grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
